Vinification and Ageing

Classic Dão winemaking from the 1960s, with controlled fermentation and prolonged aging in wood before bottling. This process prioritized tannic structure and natural acidity, fundamental elements for the wine's resilience over the decades.

Terroir

Sourced from the granitic terroir of Dão, characterized by its altitude and continental climate with Atlantic influence. These unique conditions provide a natural freshness and mineral elegance that allow the wines a slow and noble evolution in the bottle.

About the Producer José Maria da Fonseca

José Maria da Fonseca is the oldest table wine producing company in Portugal, a symbol of heritage, consistency, and innovation since 1834. ● Belonging to the same family for almost two centuries, José Maria da Fonseca (JMF) is the founder of legends like the iconic Periquita. With a strong presence in the Setúbal Peninsula, the company has the merit of combining formidable historical weight with an inexhaustible capacity for adaptation and modernization. Its historic cellars guard secular Setúbal Moscatel treasures that rank among the world's great sweet wines. Presenting a portfolio ranging from highly refined daily options to monumental top-tier creations, the brand ensures rigor, quality, and Portuguese excellence.

Notes and Information

This bottle represents a preserved example of traditional Dão production from the 1960s, originating from one of Portugal’s most historic wine houses. While not produced as a flagship wine, its survival over decades offers a rare opportunity to experience the evolution of Portuguese table wines from this period. Each bottle is unique, and variation in condition and profile is part of its authenticity. This bottle originates from our private cellar and may present natural signs of ageing consistent with long-term storage. These wines are released as rare, individual pieces and should be understood as such. Due to their age, older wines and spirits can display evolved, atypical, or fragile characteristics. While many offer unique and rewarding experiences, their condition cannot be guaranteed in the same way as current-release wines. Variations in aroma, flavour, and overall performance are part of the nature of mature bottles. These products are recommended for: - experienced wine enthusiasts - collectors - customers with an understanding of aged wines and their variability They are not intended for those seeking a predictable or standard tasting profile. By purchasing, the customer acknowledges the inherent uncertainty associated with mature bottles, including the possibility that the wine may be past its optimal drinking window. For best results, we recommend: - storing the bottle upright for 24 hours before opening - opening with care (older corks may be fragile) - decanting gently, if appropriate Each bottle represents a unique opportunity to experience a preserved fragment of wine history, where rarity and provenance are as significant as the tasting itself. ● Foz Gourmet recommends that before consuming, you carefully read the ingredients, nutricional information, recommendations for use and storage as well as any additional information. Please note that there may be occasional transcription errors.
