After a very rainy 2013 harvest final, autumn emerged hot and dry with only 4 mm of precipitation in November. At the end of the year the rain came back in force and the months of December, January and February were extremely rainy - about 400 mm, that is, very close to the annual average of this subregion. In this period the temperature was always higher than usual which led to an anticipation at the date of sacking of about 15 days compared to 2013. However, during the vegetative cycle the temperature was lower than the average which, associated with a regular precipitation from March to August, caused water stress levels to be very low throughout the cycle. Thus, we obtained dense vegetable coverings and a balanced production, which led to a perfect maturation. The fact that the temperature was lower than normal, allowed a greater photosynthetic efficiency of the plants and the precocity of the sacking was maintained until the harvest. Thus, we began the harvest on August 23 with the T. Amarela variety. Given the homogeneity of maturation, we quickly advanced to the remaining grape varieties and therefore, when the mid-September rains appeared, we already had about 85% of the finished grape harvest. The fact that in the Upper Douro we had a cooler year than usual, being our biggest challenge the management of excess heat, allows us to foresee a year of exceptional quality.
